Item Description
Two sheets of thin artboard are taped together at middle as produced, combined size measures 22x30". Features Bob Montana pen and ink art for Aug. 10, 1947 Sunday page w/11 panels. Storyline has Archie and Jughead (wearing his trademark hat) trying to enter a "Fire Prevention Contest" w/a poorly thought out essay. Jughead tries to put the letter in a mail box, not realizing it's a fire box and he has just triggered an alarm. They try to hide by climbing a tree, but go too high and the branch snaps. Luckily the fire department had been summoned by Jughead's error and they are saved by one of the two firetrucks that show up. The last panel has Jughead asking Archie if he's going to thank him for setting the alarm, to which Archie replies "Why Don't You Join The Fire Department And Go To Blazes!" "Archie" title in first panel is paste-over (w/obvious glue staining), rest is original art. Art is unsigned but by Archie creator Montana. Margins have scattered editorial notes including one w/arrow pointing into art that reads "No One Pays Any Attention To These Notes...But PLEASE Make This Fire Box Red!" Two aged pieces of tape at left and right where sheets are attached. Margins have some scattered dust soiling and smudging, but art remains clean and if matted would display VF. A prime early example.
