Item Description
5x22" sheet w/original pen and ink art by Segar, whose signature appears in last of six panels, his small cigar moniker appearing in the lower corner of the second to last panel. In addition to pen and ink art, the panels feature areas of blue ink wash, indicating to the engraver as to where there would be a mechanical gray tone. Art is for Christmas Day, 1937 and is dated in second panel w/King Feature Syndicate copyright strip in second and third panels. Part of the "Valley Of The Goons" storyline, strip title "Enough Rope For Hanging!" is written in blue pencil on back of strip. Popeye is pictured in three panels, one w/Wimpy, who appears again in another panel w/o Popeye. Popeye and Wimpy are in a Goon Jail. A Goon Guard appears in two panels, motioning for Wimpy to follow him and leading him out. This causes Popeye to wonder what they want Wimpy for, which is revealed in last panel as Goon Executioner stands w/noose in hand. Slight trim to bottom margin, but this does not affect art in any way, and art retains an Exc. appearance. While unframed, art comes w/nice quality mat. Choice example of "Popeye" daily strip original art. From the Jan Wahl Collection.
