Item Description
Pair of incredible personal items used by this Cuban HOF member. First is his Cuban passport dated 1942. 4x5.5" w/32 pages. As noted on the JSA LOA the writing on the first five pages is all in Oms' hand. This includes a signed "Personal Description" page in which he lists his profession as a baseball player along w/date of birth and other pertinent info. Page two has his attached photo. Additional pages have official inked info (in the hand of a Government official) and/or ink stamps noting destinations including the UK, Jamaica and Venezuela. Second item is his Venezuelan work visa dated 1939. 3.5x5.5" w/16 pages. Extensively filled out in ink by a Government official w/detailed personal information including his occupation again noted as a baseball player. One page has been signed in ink by Oms. Another page has pair of Oms photos, front and side views. The real highlight are the two center pages which have a full set of all 10 fingerprints of Oms. Both items have moderate wear/aging from use. Staple rust to visa. Pair is VG. Oms was a Cuban center fielder in Negro League baseball and Latin American baseball, most notably with the Cuban Stars (East). Oms played winter ball in the Cuban League from 1922 to 1946. He led the league in batting average three times and won the Cuban League's MVP Award in 1928-29. He ranks second all time for career batting average in the Cuban League (behind Cristobal Torriente) with an average of .345 and he was elected to the Cuban Baseball HOF in 1944. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
