Item Description
See Shel Dorf biography in #1797. Thin art board folder has “Shel Dorf” handwritten name and phone number on front. Opens to 22.5x28.5” revealing a virtual “Who’s Who” of ink drawings signed to Shel by artists who attended that year's convention. Highlights include: Milton Caniff “Thud Shelley” caricature of his letterer Shel by Milton Caniff that Caniff used in his “Steve Canyon” comic strip,  a prospector-type character by Jack Kirby, Nick Fury by Jim Steranko, a take on his famous floating eyeball by Rick Griffin, a Sergio Aragones self-caricature w/Alfred E. Neuman, a Noel Sickles caricature of Shel, a writer George Clayton Johnson self-caricature, a great Batman sketch by Ernie Chan, a nicely detailed Conan the Barbarian by Alfredo Alcala, a Don Rico Daredevil sketch, an image of Brenda Starr by Dale Messick, an Incredible Hulk sketch by Len Wein, a P. Craig Russell Doctor Strange sketch, a Yosemite Sam sketch by Mark Evanier, an image of Tarzan by Russ Manning, a image of Marmaduke wearing a "Comics Con '70" hat by Brad Anderson, Broom-Hilda by Russ Myers, Momma by Mel Lazarus, Mr. Abernathy by Frank Ridgeway, a bizarre monster sketch by Marv Wolfman and a unicorn sketch by Theodore Sturgeon. This art board has also been signed by Superman actor Kirk Alyn. Light bumps at corner tips, bit of margin edge wear here and there. Right side has light age yellowing w/ light wear along center vertical line as expected. Will mat and frame to Fine appearance. An incredible and historic compilation done as a “Thank You” for the founder of the Comic-Con. Truly unique. From the Charlie Roberts Collection
