Item Description
10.5x12" across the bottom edge. In the early days of the Civil War, the Pennsylvania Legislature authorized Governor Andrew Curtin (see previous item) to purchase battle flags for each regiment that Pennsylvania contributed to the Union Army. When the Civil War ended, Pennsylvania's military department was in charge of collecting state-issued flags. Many were gathered as regiments were mustered out of service. On July 4, 1866, the date on this flag, the battle flags were returned to the Commonwealth during a gigantic parade with Civil War veterans representing the state's 215 regiments marching through Philadelphia to a ceremony at Independence Hall. Given the date on this flag and the state seal on canton it seems likely this flag was used in Philadelphia on that day. The next day the battle flags were taken to Harrisburg to be stored in special cases in the State Arsenal Building. As our photo shows, fabric has numerous tan age spots with most on lower two white stripes. Fabric is gone from the right edge with lesser amounts off top red stripe. The flag is laying on a thin stiff sheet under a sheet of glass all within a 12x16" riker mount. What remains of the flag, about 75%, has age but displays well and is a rare artifact of a single day historic event in state history.
