Item Description
3.5x5.5" AZO back. Strong and distinct image of him in his Cleveland uniform. Printed text at bottom reads "Louis Sockalexis Penobscot Tribe Old Town ME. Copyrighted 1912 A. F. Orr Old Town ME." Louis died in 1913, a year after this postcard was printed. He is regarded as the first Native American to play in the Major Leagues. He played for the Cleveland Spiders from 1897-1899. This postcard comes well after his playing days but is rare and historic nonetheless and there is very little in the way of Sockalexis material. Lt. aging to the reverse but unused. Slightest trace of edge wear. Front is clean and glossy. Exc. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
