Item Description
8.75x11.5” album issued by Cuban caramel company. Title reads “Propagandas Montiel Presenta Los Reyes Del Deporte” with key words basically translating as Sporting Kings/Famous Athletes. Great multi-sport illustrated front cover with emphasis on baseball and boxing (also the emphasis on the content). Back cover includes illustration of “The Great Stadium Of Havana.” 32 pages. Designed to hold set of 180 paper picture cards. Pages include additional sports-related illustrations around card mounting areas along with that athlete’s name and short bio. 168 of the 180 card set is here and all but one have been mounted at appropriate spots. The first several pages feature boxers and those cards that are here include Jack Johnson, Gene Tunney, Primo Carnera, Max Baer, Joe Louis. The highlight of the album is an extensive selection of Major League Baseball players which include Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Bob Feller, Lou Gehrig, Hank Greenberg, Stan Musial, Mel Ott, Jimmie Foxx, Andy Pafko, Carl Hubbell, Joe Dimaggio, Christie Mathewson, John Mize and more. Other baseball players include those from the Florida International League as well as some Cuban League players highlighted by Martin Dihigo as well as Armando Marsans, Adolfo Luque, Silvio Garcia, Alejandro Crespo. A few additional cards feature wrestlers, tennis player. The 12 missing cards are: 16,18,32,44,46,90,117,137,143,147,163,165 with the only notable card being Ted Williams. The album has obvious wear/aging including loose pages and scattered insect damage in the form of small holes/tunnels mostly to the bottom page margins. Mounted cards are largely unaffected, however bottom corner card of each page does have a 1/16" hole not affecting the photo image. Page margin wear and some moisture staining is also present. While far from a high grade example, it is still a near complete album and a rarely seen Cuban issue. Overall album is Fair and cards are largely VG or so as mounted. In our May 2010 auction we offered another copy from the Merkin collection with less cards (163) but somewhat better condition and it sold for $1,804. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
