Item Description
This is the first of three annual Toleteros card sets issued during the Puerto Rican League winter seasons. The album is 9x11" with stiff paper cover and 18 pages that have designated areas for mounting the set of 168 cards. Each card is about 1.5x2.25" w/sepia-tone photo and player name on bottom margin. Album contains 149 cards all neatly mounted at appropriate spots. Cards are mounted to page fronts, page backs have advertising text. Album cover is missing the 2x3" "Toleteros" sticker from front center. This just had an image of baseball player along w/list of the six teams represented in this album. The true highlight of this set, and included in the album, is Hilton Smith. This card alone is listed in the Standard Catalog Of Vintage Baseball Cards with values of $20,000 NM, $10,000 EX, $6,000 VG. Other key cards included in this album are: Willard Brown, Tommy Butts, Francisco Coimbre, George Scales, Quincy Trouppe, Tetelo Vargas. A complete list of all 149 cards is available online. The Hilton Smith card has a pair of tiny pencil marks but is still clean and w/fairly sharp corners. Overall condition as mounted varies, some cards show bit more wear/aging while others are very bright and clean. Visually cards grade from Good to Exc. Still a well preserved set overall and rare to find this complete and w/the Hilton Smith rarity. The cover and pages themselves have moderate wear/aging w/trace of staple rust. Good to VG. Please contact us if more detailed condition information and/or photos are desired. In our Nov. 2011 auction we offered another of this album but w/less cards (131 including Hilton Smith) and it sold for $6,325. From the Richard Merkin Collection and come with Hake's COA.  A complete list of all 149 in this album is as follows:  Yuyo Acosta, Hector Agosta, Alberto Alberdeston, Alberto Alicea, Jaime Almendro, Guinea Alomar, Pedro Alomar, Alfredo Alonso, Yiyo Alonso, Pablo Andino, Jueyito Andrade, Paday Anglero, Luis Arroyo, Eugene Baker, Dan Bankhead, Bennett, Carlos Bernier, Hiram Bithorn, Efrain Blasini, Johnny Britton, Willard Brown, Tommy Butts, Joe Buzas, Luis R.
