Item Description
This 'King of the Ferrotypes' is huge compared to its lesser relatives. These ferrotypes with thick brass shell rims were made for all four candidates in 1860 in four sizes from 25mm up to this jumbo at 47mm in diameter (or 54mm if the original brass wire loop at top is included) or 1-3/16" (2-1/16" if including the loop) and a full 5/16" thick. DeWitt/Sullivan lists this size as AL 1860-77 but has no photo example. Interestingly, DeWitt states: "Note: It is assumed the Lincoln portrait was Number 2. King's Authority for the piece was a coin sale in 1914." The item DeWitt is describing is pictured as Hake AL-3049 and does show the image he calls Lincoln "No.2." The example we offer, however, features what DeWitt calls Lincoln portrait "No.1" and is unlisted in his original book, unlisted in Hake, has a different design than Sullivan AL 1860-121 and has not been offered, as far as we can tell, in at least a decade. Most of the thin silver flashing has evaporated from the flower covered rim which is quite typical. There is a tiny 1/16" mark on Lincoln's right eye. There is a 3/16" off and on hairline scratch across his forehead. However, by any standard the emulsion on the Lincoln side is extremely Fine. The Hamlin side has a bit more wear. There is an inverted "T" shaped scratch on his forehead, tiny loss from his right eye, a section of detail gone from the lower left of his mouth and jaw and a sliver off the extreme lower edge at 4 o'clock. Overall we grade the Hamlin side as Fine. As a bonus, this is only one of very few doughnut examples of any size we've seen in a reference book or auction to still retain the large original wire loop from the top rim edge. A great rarity and highly desirable.
