Item Description
During the heyday of his popularity in the 1940s and into the early 1950s, Captain Marvel had more readers than Superman. As such many pieces of merchandise and various premium items were produced featuring the character (and his supporting character the Marvel Family). However one item that wasn't capitalized upon was that of an official Captain Marvel costume. While various Superman costumes and playsuits were made, the closest Captain Marvel came was a now incredibly rare "Play Cape." Offered here is the only known example of this silk-screened linen cape, measuring 17" across at its widest and tapering to 13.25" across at collar w/an overall length of 21.25". The cape faithfully reproduces the design Fawcett's "World's Mightiest Mortal" sported in the comics, w/the addition of a portrait of "Captain Marvel" at bottom right corner. Of note, there is a printed note below this that reads "Play Cape - Does Not Possess Superhuman Powers." Produced by B.C. Mfg. & Sales Co Inc. of Decatur, IL and ©1948 Fawcett Publications Inc. Cape has two pin holes at top left corner and is evenly aged w/some wrinkles as stored over the years, but is complete w/original strings to secure cape around child's neck. Silk-screened design remains bold and vivid. Fine/VF overall. One of, if not the rarest piece of vintage Captain Marvel merchandise, let alone Golden Age comic book memorabilia, this is sure to become the centerpiece of any Captain Marvel fan's collection.
