Item Description
In 1940, Republic Pictures approached Detective Comics, Inc. about making a Superman movie serial, but nothing came of it and Republic continued their superhero search, eventually settling on Superman's main competitor - Fawcett Publications' Captain Marvel. Offered here is 28x42.5" poster for display at newsstands to promote Republic's 1941 12-chapter movie serial starring Tom Tyler in the title role of Captain Marvel and Frank Coghlan, Jr. as his alter ego, Billy Batson. Adapted from Fawcett's popular Captain Marvel comic titles Whiz Comics and Captain Marvel Adventures, it became the first superhero movie and this poster was displayed where the source material was sold in an effort to promote the movie serial, even going as far as showing Captain Marvel bursting forth from an issue of Whiz Comics. This poster was featured in the pressbook for the serial. Blank marquee at bottom remains unused. Originally folded poster has been linen-mounted and has had some scattered professional restoration along fold lines, most of which blends nicely. Now rolled and VF/Exc. overall. Boasting wonderful crossover to fans of comics and movies, there are few examples of this coveted poster, making this one of the rarest Captain Marvel posters. Harry Matetsky Collection & Shazam!
