Item Description
3.5x5.5" with photo of team in uniform standing on a ball field w/a few spectators in bleachers behind them. Unused reverse includes text "Kodak Mexicana, Ltd." At center of the team is Willie Wells and postcard dates to 1943, the only year he played for this team. His teammates included Pedro Formental and Nate Hunter, both who also played for Negro League teams (Formental- Memphis Red Sox and Hunter- Pittsburgh Crawfords, Homestead Grays, KC Monarchs and others). Wells was a shortstop in the Negro Leagues from 1924-1948 playing for many teams including Homestead Grays, Newark Eagles, New York Black Yankees and St. Louis Stars (during which the team won three pennants in a four year period). He ranks among the all-time Negro League leaders in doubles, triples, home runs and stolen bases. Wells was inducted into the HOF in 1997. Front has small spot of missing surface paper at each corner. Pair of tiny 1/16" insect holes at feet of 4th player from the right but these hidden at first glance and really only noticeable when viewed closely. Inked number top right. Lt. aging to reverse. Image remains bold. VG. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
