Item Description
The "I'm The Guy" phrase is closely associated with and perhaps created by the famous cartoonist Rube Goldberg who wrote a "Comic Song" with this title in 1912 which seems to have inspired a national mania picked up by the cigarette companies who gave buttons as premiums with purchases. There are many of these that include cartoon scenes by Goldberg as well as other famous cartoonists of the day but these 174 buttons are the slogan varieties done either with red or blue backgrounds. This is the most extensive collection known to us. 9 plastic coin holder pages are filled with 174 buttons of which no more than 20 show some visible stain or other damage. A few of these are actually printed on tin rather than the standard button style of a paper with celluloid covering. There are a small number of these and they are quite rare although they look much like the others. The litho tin ones do not have a back paper and some back papers may be missing from the cello buttons but vast majority have them and they name the cigarette companies Chesterfield, Clix, Obak, and Perfection. The group starts with a button reading "I'm The Guy That Broke The Record" and concludes with one reading "I'm The Guy That's Chief Of Mischief." An amazing collection years in the making.
