Item Description
Dorothy Knapp (1907-1986) was a commercial artist and art teacher who designed many commercial First Day Covers (FDCs) during the 1940s, mainly for Fleetwood, one of the largest FDC publishers. Offered here is a 3.75x6.5" FDC w/nicely detailed mixed media illustration that takes up nearly half of the front of the FDC, depicting the Project Mercury capsule in space, w/the Earth, Saturn and the Sun visible amongst the stars. Hand-lettered "Project Mercury" text at top w/"1962 - U.S. Man In Space" hand-lettered text banner at bottom. FDC has Feb. 20, 1962 Cape Canaveral, FL. postmark and "Project Mercury" stamp. Art has been signed by Knapp at bottom right in black ink. Exc.
