Item Description
17x22" thin artboard features Bob Montana original pen and ink art for Nov. 1942 issue of "Pep Comics" #33. This is a very early piece of Archie art as the character had just debuted debuted in "Pep Comics" #22 (Dec. 1941). 10-panel page is the second from storyline that features Archie and his friends reading a letter addressed to Jughead that details his cousin visiting from Virginia. This excites the boys, who beg Jughead for a date w/his cousin, who concedes for three sodas apiece. The boys draw lots out of Jughead's hat which upsets Archie, as he pulls Saturday, the night he has a date w/Betty. Betty appears in one panel when Archie lies to break their date. The boys then load up on Archie's jalopy and wait at train station for Jughead's cousin. They see a pretty girl in the window and assume it's her before another voice yelling "YooHoo! Cousin Jughead! Here Ah Am!" which causes all four of the boys to do double-takes, though Jughead's cousin is not revealed. Penciled title and date at upper right w/scattered pencil editorial notations in margins. Some white correctional fluid touch-ups in margins, but o/w art is all original. Margins has some moderate scattered dust soiling, handling wear and .5" tear at top center margin, but art areas remain clean and if matted, would display VF. Reverse of page has large 13.5x18.5" color portrait of Jughead. Art is very well done. Scattered aging/dust soiling. Displays Fine. While original Montana strip art is somewhat common, older Archie-related comic pages such as this one are quite scarce. A prime early example.
