Item Description
Original large 10.5x14" high quality matte finish photo. c. 1940. This is one of few known career contemporary photos of Effa who was a female sports executive and the first woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. She co-owned the Newark Eagles baseball franchise in the Negro League with her husband Abe from 1935-1946 and was sole owner through 1948 after his death. She was not the intended subject of this photo but is prominently seen nonetheless. Image is from the stands of a ballpark, we assume a Negro League game. At the center is an African American man in suit and hat smoking a cigar with a second man just in front of him and both look directly at the camera. Just to the right of the center man, and one row behind him, is Effa looking to the right and gesturing. Reverse has penciled notation "Uncle John" we believe a reference to the central figure of this photo. Appears to be a candid keepsake photo as opposed to anything for publicity purposes. Heavy and obvious margin wear with crease, small tears and clipped corners. Faint vertical crease at center. Few small brown stains but none of the defects impact the Effa image and most could be easily matted out. Overall just Good but if matted would display VF.
