Item Description
3.5x5.5" c. early 1930s w/nice full figure images of Gus and four women, all dressed to the nines. Gus is at the center along with his wife Helen as well as Louise Harris (Wife of George Harris), Ada Harris (wife of Woogie Harris) and one unidentified woman. This postcard was produced by Harrison Studios of Hot Springs, Arkansas (corresponding text is at lower right). They also produced postcards of Negro League teams/players including the holy grail Josh Gibson postcard. Gus was a prominent African-American business man and owner of the Pittsburgh Crawfords. He bought the team in 1930 and revenue generated from his gambling and bootlegging operations allowed him to sign black baseball's biggest names including Josh Gibson. He also formed the National Negro Association, later called the Negro National League. The Harris brothers were Woogie, Greenlee's partner in running numbers and George ("Tiny") who played for the Crawfords. All are tied together in this photo by their spouses and the image is sharp and clear. Front has inked names of the four identifed while back has not been postally used but does have additional ID's added. Small spots at corners from mounting. Trace of margin wear to the front but clean. VF. A rare postcard of an historic figure in Negro League history. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
