Item Description
Cardboard and part of a larger broadside that has been trimmed to 5.5x8" but does include the full team image as well as banner reading "Worlds-Colored Champions." 15 players shown and all in Monarchs uniforms. This includes National Baseball HOF members Hilton Smith and Willard Brown. Other players include Buck O'Neill, Frank Duncan, Ted Strong, Joe Greene, Newt Allen, Connie Johnson, Frank Bradley. Margin trim a bit uneven at top, scattered dust soiling, trace of corner tip wear and some small faint creases. Still displays nicely as encapsulated and designated "Authentic." Strong photo image. The Kansas City Monarchs were charter members of the Negro National League in 1920 and the longest running franchise in Negro League history. They won their first World Series title in 1924. This 1941 team was part of the franchise's streak of four consecutive titles spanning 1939-1942. This item originates from the personal collection of J. Leonard Mitchell, who played professionally with the Negro Leagues in the 1920's. As one of the organizers of the Louisville Black Colonels in 1939, he was integrally involved with Negro League baseball at all levels, including its promotion. Friendly with such notables as Syd Pollack, Floyd Patterson, and Satchel Paige, he also had access to many significant sporting events of the time. Comes w/letter of provenance.
