Item Description
9" long mostly tin litho toy comes in original cardboard box w/illustrated lid. Early 1960s by Made in Japan by Horikowa, early 1960s. Box has some lt. edge creases and even age toning. Fine/VF. Toy is not version marked "Friendship 7" but is clearly based on the John Glenn Mercury mission launched Feb. 20, 1962. Visible through the four clear plastic windows is a fully dimensional tin astronaut w/detailed control panel behind him. Has working friction mechanism and as the capsule travels forward, the astronaut rotates 360° as if weightless in space. Also produces engine noise. Designed to spark from the rocket engine although flint is missing and toy no longer sparks. One exhaust port has a minor 1/8" hairline only noticeable when viewed closely. Body has a few scattered paint nicks/scratches but still displays Exc. Great design.
