Item Description
5x7" original glossy from 1955 showing 16 players on ball field who were members of this historic barnstorming team. This was a team of black Major Leaguers on a six-week tour through mostly Southern cities, to show off their talents and draw additional income at a time when salaries were minuscule. They played assembled All-Star teams in every city they visited, often coming across stars from the Negro Leagues. The players are shown here wearing the Major League uniform of their current team (with exception of three players as noted). Shown are: Don Newcombe/Brooklyn Dodgers, Joe Black/Reds, George Crowe/Braves, Hank Aaron/Braves, Brooks Lawrence/Cardinals, Charlie White/Rochester Red Wings (but he also played for the Braves this year), Connie Johnson/White Sox, Larry Doby/Indians, Lou Louden/Negro League team New York Cubans, Jim Gilliam/Dodgers, Hank Thompson/NY Giants, Willie Mays/Giants, Sam Jones/Cubs, Gene Baker/Cubs, Ernie Banks/Cubs, Monte Irvin/Minneapolis Millers (but he also played for the Giants this year). Written on the reverse in ink are the player's names and there is also the photographers ink stamp name and address, "Ernest C. Withers Memphis Tenn." Moderate handling wear w/creases but much only visible in reflected light. Photo remains glossy and image is sharp and clear. VG. A truly remarkable photograph documenting a gathering of some of the game's biggest stars and future HOF legends. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
