Item Description
This disputed election resulted in an unprecedented Constitutional crisis. On Jan. 29, 1877, the US Congress passed a law forming a 15 member Electoral Commission to settle the result. Five members came from each house of congress and were joined by five members of the Supreme Court. The Commission began meeting on Jan. 31 and adjourned on Mar. 2; two days later Hayes was inaugurated w/o disturbance. This 3x4.75" ticket is dated for February 2, 1877 with serial number 1087 and text "Counting The Vote For President And Vice President - Admit Bearer - To Gallery Of House Of Representatives." Below is serial number/date and two facsimile signatures of T.W. Ferry and L.J. Randall. First we've seen in other than bw with this being in deep orange. Pinhole at top, dark age toning on left margins and .25" spot of surface paper off upper left. Blank reverse has 1" square of surface paper off. A rare ticket from early in the deliberations and in a striking color. Our last example (in bw) exceeded $300. VG. Morry Greener Collection.
