Item Description
3.75x4.75" glossy snapshot shows five players standing full figure in uniforms and holding bats. Cool Papa Bell is first on left side and Josh Gibson is second from right. Player at center is Lazaro Salazar. Image is light but still distinct. Emulsion has yellowed with age. Photo has lt. handling creases, mostly just visible in reflected light. Reverse side has writing in ink. Overall VG. This team was organized by dictator Rafael Trujillo who dedicated the 1937 Dominican Baseball League season to his re-election with two rival teams from Santo Domingo merging together for 1937. They raided the Negro Leagues to ensure victory. The team won the championship series with Aguilas. After the season the league collapsed and the Negro Leaguers returned to the U.S. and Trujillo was ousted. The short-lived team was one of the most noticeable in Dominican League history. Exceptional photo featuring two legendary players from the Negro Leagues, and both are members of the National Baseball HOF. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
