Item Description
See Bismarck Churchhills 1936 uniform #1264.  8x10" glossy shows 11 member integrated team in full uniform with manager Neal Churchill in front row center.  Standing directly behind him is Satchel Paige.  Bottom of photo has printed players last names.  Key players include: Hilton Smith, Quincy Troupe, Ted "Double Duty" Radcliffe, Moose Johnson.  Others shown include: Haley, Morris, Johnson, Desiderato, Leary, Oberholzer, Hendee.  Reverse side of photo has some paper on surface from scrapbook removal.  Front has trace of lt. dust soil, mostly noticeable around margin edges.  Two tips have marks from mounting corners.  Image area is glossy and Fine.  The semi-professional ball team was based in Bismarck, North Dakota in the 1930s. The team won the National Semi-Pro Baseball Tournament in Wichita, Kansas in  1935, the year this photo was taken.  The Churchills played independently of any league because their mixed race roster was a problem in a period of segregation.  The team was owned by the city's local Chrysler car dealer.  Paige lead the team to the national championship and said "That Was The Best Team I Ever Saw; The Best Players I Ever Played With.  But Who Ever Heard Of Them."  Exceptional team photo. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
