Item Description
c. early 1990s used to illustrate a Long Island newspaper article on finance. 20-3/8x26" wood frame has glass over recessed mat holding 17.25x23.5" sheet of art paper. Art is done in black markers and charcoal with wonderful likeness of the noted artist smoking cigar holding issue of "Newsday" in his left hand. He is wearing a vest covered with ink stamp dollar signs which are accented in black paint. Art is signed at upper right with large "Merkin" signature. Left side has some white-out correction fluid which is a bit yellowed with age, otherwise image area is Fine. Richard Merkin (1938-2009) enjoyed much acclaim as a painter, illustrator, writer, and educator. Merkin's works reside in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institute, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum among others. He was a regular contributor to the New Yorker, Harper's, GQ, and other periodicals as well as a contributing editor to Vanity Fair. Well done. Ready to hang.
