Item Description
c. 1895. 15x19.75" art board has 13.5x18.25" India ink and wash image area of desperadoes grabbing horse reins of stagecoach and dead driver in seat and passenger looking on from inside. Art is signed "Smith 95" in ink at lower right. Reverse side has pencil text "Ledger Office May 27 '95", obviously referring to publication in "Philadelphia Ledger" newspaper. Blank margins are heavily worn with pieces out but main image area will mat and frame to Fine/VF appearance. Smith was a Philadelphia based illustrator who worked in a variety of styles from pen and ink to full color paintings, primarily known for his western art. A nice early example of Smith's western theme work.
