Item Description
15x20.5" wood frame with glass holds 12.25x17.75" photo showing 20 member team in uniform along with apparent owner and trainer. All 20 players have signed in fountain pen ink in bottom grassy area of photo. Martin Dihigo is standing in back row center and has signed at lower right with 2.75" wide signature. Other "keys" as listed on the JSA LOA are: R. Navarro, G. Torres, S. Hernandez, G. Garcia, A. Ruiz, M. Gonzalez, R. Linares, R. Monteagudo, L. Davenport. Relief mounted photo has bit of wear around edges including a few nail holes in margins. Signatures are a bit faded but most still remain distinct and legible, including Dihigo. Overall Fine and displays great as professionally framed and matted. Dihigo (1906-1971) excelled as a pitcher and second baseman. He began his professional career in the winter of 1922/23 at the age of 16 and had his first summer in US baseball in 1923 as a first baseman for the Negro League's Cuban Stars (East). He played in the Negro Leagues from 1923 through 1936 and again briefly in 1945. Over the course of his career he played all nine positions. He lead the Negro Leagues in home runs in 1926 and 1935. He is the only player inducted into the Cuban, Mexican and National Baseball Hall of Fame. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
