Item Description
1" dia. with most unusual totally flat and smooth wide brass rim edge which has a beveled inner circle with ferrotype set at center depicting Lincoln with his name as part of the photo above his head. Reverse of the piece is covered in a flat brass plate with a pin extending from the top center running vertically downward and held in place by a small die-cut brass clasp. DeWitt/Sullivan designate this Lincoln photo as portrait #1. The brass rim has some microscopic scratching but not deep and for the most part just showing on very close inspection and/or reflected light. The emulsion is in gorgeous condition with the only flaw being a very light and faint .25" hairline scratch running from the very top of his forehead towards the upper right and crossing the next to last letter of his name. This hairline scratch shows only a trifle even in reflected light and when viewed normally from most angles does not show at all. It does not break the emulsion surface to any significant degree and the image is with beautiful sharp contrast so all details are remarkably clear. With a magnifying glass we just discovered a virtual pinpoint and microscopic emulsion speck off just below his bow tie but this is most minor. A rarely seen ferrotype with quite unusual frame design. Extremely Fine and with NM emulsion. First we've offered.
