Item Description
2.75x4.5" nice vintage snapshot shows Charleston in suit and his bride standing in front of park bench. His bride was Jane Blalock from Harrisburg, PA and they were married on Nov. 27, 1922 and this photo appears to be taken the day of that happy event. Photo has very minor age yellowing, otherwise Exc. The Harrisburg Giants joined the Eastern Colored League for the 1924 season with Oscar Charleston playing center field and managing the team. The Giants became known primarily for their hitting. Batters included Charleston, Heavy Johnson, and Fats Jenkins. They played through 1927 and then dropped out of the ECL the following year to play an independent schedule with best players going to other teams. Sports writers dubbed Charleston as the black Ty Cobb. He played with several teams over the years and in 1945 was signed as a scout for the Brooklyn Dodgers by Branch Rickey. In 1954 he managed the Indianapolis Clowns and lead them to a league championship in his last season in professional baseball. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1976. A great and unique image. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
