Item Description
Simon and Kirby excelled at creating comic books centered on teams of young boys. By the time this team arrived, the war was over. Without the context of the war, Simon and Kirby need to find another situation which would allow a team of boys to work together; they choose the American West. Boy's Ranch is considered by some to be the best Simon and Kirby creation ever. The dialogue is quick and sharp and the art ranks among the most enjoyable that Kirby ever did. Published by Harvey Comics, the series lasted six issues. Established as a comic publisher since 1940, Harvey's output in the first decade was comprised of licensed characters such as Dick Tracy and The Green Hornet. With Boy's Ranch, as well as other work done that Simon and Kirby did for them, they were attempting to create a broader market for themselves. Shortly, Harvey would license the cartoon characters from Famous Studios and move their company in a different direction. This issue is the very first in the book's run. It contains art from Simon and Kirby. There is also a text piece entitled Meet the Authors which highlights Simon and Kirby. The pages are cream to off-white. The book is CGC-certified 8.0 (VF). This copy is tied with one other as the third highest graded copy they have seen.
