Item Description
25.75x34.75” tall overall linen-backed with 24x33” poster in center. Poster was designed by Karl Kochler and Victor Ancona. Perhaps the most sophisticated example of atrocity propaganda to have emerged out of WWII, the poster won first prize in the “Nature Of The Enemy” part in the US Artists For Victory competition in 1942. Over 2,200 entries were received and the prize-winning posters were shown at the New York Museum Of Modern Art. Only a small quantity of the USA version were printed by W.A. Hoe Co. of New York for private distribution. In 1943, the Mediterranean Theater of Operations printed a version for use in Italy reading “Ecco il Nemico” (here is the enemy). A year later in 1944, the US Army produced a very small printing with the same text but in French reading “Voici l’Ennemi.” This is the rarest of the 3 versions. Swann Galleries recently sold a USA version for around $16,000 and this French version (possibly this very example) is known to have traded privately over a decade ago for $15,000. In certain light, very faint traces of original fold lines can be seen. The poster displays Mint. An outstanding example of an important rarity. The consignor has established a conservative opening bid.
