Item Description
Lot of 4 single panel pen and ink and/or charcoal original political cartoon art c. early-mid 1940s. Art is 10.25x12.25", 15x15", 13.5x17.25", 14x19.25". All are anti-Japanese sentiment related. First by "Louisville Courier-Journal" cartoonist Ed Finch is titled "The Italians Have No Monopoly On Scramming" and shows 3 Japanese soldiers running from Salamaua, Kiska and Kharkov. Second is by George Scarbo and shows Uncle Sam pulling teeth from the large head of Tojo, each tooth having name of famous WWII battles - Guadalcanal, Attu, Ellice, Russell Islands already laying on table. Next piece is by "Los Angeles Herald Examiner" cartoonist John Maloney is titled "All Quiet Under The Pacific" and shows Hirohito sitting beneath the waves amidst the wreckage of the Japanese Imperial Navy w/sign at his feet reading "Jap Solomon Island Fleet." Nice details. Last piece is by "Los Angles Times" cartoonist Bruce Russell and is titled "It Laid A Couple Of Eggs" in reference to large image of New Guinea portrayed as "Jap New Guinea Hen" w/Imperial Japanese Rising Sun on its shoulder and "2 Broken Eggs At Its Feet - Gona Loss And Buna Loss." Russell has signed his name in ink at lower right and personally inscribed "With Kindest Regards Bruce Russell." All have matching mats that range from 13.5x20" to 17.75x23.5". All but second piece have label w/name of cartoonist and newspaper at top, title of cartoon at bottom. All display Exc.
