Item Description
8-5/8x25.25" double-mat contains artboard that has been double-matted to 5-3/8x22" and features pen and ink original art w/screentone accents by Popeye creator E.C. Segar (1894-1938). Art is for Dec. 25, 1936 daily strip and bears "The Mystery Melody" title in blue colored pencil at bottom center margin. Strip has five panels, w/Poop Deck Pappy and Popeye discussing mysterious melody coming closer to their house, much to Olive Oyl's frightened displeasure. Last panel reveals the source of the eerie music, being played by Popeye antagonist Sea Hag, who is pulled along in a boat by her pet vulture Bernard. Poop Deck Pappy appears in first two panels while Popeye and Olive Oyl appear separately, each in single panel. Fourth panel features inked "12-25" date and last panel has KFS copyright strip. Art has typical aging to screentone accents and some lt. scattered dust soiling to margins, but o/w art remains clean and Exc.
