Item Description
Issued in 1927 by the York Caramel Co. of York, PA, these black and white cards are among the last of the caramel issues. Measuring 1-3/8"x2.5", they are similar in appearance to earlier candy and tobacco cards. Nice photo fronts, backs have brief text on that player and "This Is One Of A  Series Of Sixty Of The Most Prominent Stars In Baseball" along w/company info. The set includes several variations and is designated in the ACC as E210. It is closely related to the W502 set of the same year. Type 1 cards can be differentiated from Type 2's by the orientation of the back printing. On Type 1 cards, the player name on back is at right when a normally viewed front is turned over.

Presented here is the first of three lots in this auction comprising a complete set of 1927 York Caramel - Type 1 baseball cards. The offered example here is the key card of the entire 60 card series, the "Bambino" himself, Babe Ruth. Described on card back as "Greatest Slugger Of All Times." Utilizing an image from much earlier in the Babe's career, during his Boston Red Sox tenure, this amazing beauty was issued commensurate with Ruth's greatest season of his illustrious career, 1927. The Babe's 1927 New York Yankees ball club would go down in history as arguably the greatest team of all-time with Ruth setting the record for most home runs in a season up to that point with 60.

Although graded a PSA 1, this card presents nicely and at a much higher level than the assigned technical grade. Furthermore, all of Babe's images from his old Boston Red Sox days are always highly desirable, thus adding even more prestige to this incredible relic. Finally, with only 36 total examples having been graded by PSA as of this writing, you certainly don't want to miss out on the opportunity to pick up this rare and desirable Ruth card. The most recent comp sales as documented on VCP, both for 1.5 examples graded by SGC, were $9,000 in 2021 and $9,700 in Feb. of 2022.
