Item Description
10x14-3/8" thick artboard has mixed media original art by prolific and renowned Spanish Marvel Comics cover artist Rafael López Espí. Cover is for the Conan El Barbaro Vol. 2 #42, which reprints Conan The Barbarian Vol. 1 #4 and #5 April and May 1971 (featuring the classic stories "Tower of the Elephant" & "Zukala's Daughter") and was published in Spain by Mundi in 1980, ©1978 Marvel Comics Group. Artboard has been hand-painted from edge to edge w/art showing Conan in the jaws of a tigress, very different from Marvel's cover art by Barry Windsor Smith. Espí's interpretation was inspired by an interior panel of Conan fighting the tiger (the shape shifted daughter of Zukala named Zephra). Art has two-piece vellum layout overlay which has extensive handwritten Spanish text (including title at top) and was once taped to back of artboard (which has since come loose). Also photocopy used for story title in book which doesn't correspond to the cover art. Back of artboard has handwritten "Conan 2" at top in pencil. Artboard has some minor chipping on right edge but o/w art remains bright, clean and Exc. A wonderful example from the era when Espí's art dominated covers of Spanish Marvel comic books, featuring one of Marvel's popular characters and is unsigned by artist. Superb and dynamic cover art. Comes w/reading copy of the Spanish comic this cover art was created for.
