Item Description
19.75x21" artboard has pen and ink original art by Buster Brown creator R.F. Outcault (1863-1928) that has been partially hand-colored. Art is dated May 21, 1916. Sunday page featured 12 panels and was produced w/o topper panel. "Buster Brown" Sunday pages were printed both w/and w/o toppers depending on the publication. Profusely illustrated page has handwritten "A Series Of Friendly Calls" in pencil at top margin and features Buster going over to play w/his rough friend Smithy, which causes Buster's mother to warn that perhaps he should go armed. Buster returns disheveled and beat up w/a black eye, which prompts his father to go over and in turn get beaten up by Smithy's father. Buster's mother and grandfather each meet similar fates and then the whole family heads over w/clubs, only to find out Smithy's entire family has come down w/the mumps. The Brown family doctor arrives and finds the only member of Buster's family to have come down w/the mumps is his grandmother. Buster appears in total of seven panels, Tige appears in six. Panels have been partially hand-colored as was the process of the day, to give the printer an idea of how to color the entire strip. Bottom margin has handwritten coloring notations and date in black ink. Outcault has signed at bottom of last panel. Back has "Sunday American" engraver's job order dated March 30, 1916 w/handwritten job notes. Artboard is evenly aged and shows obvious corner tip wear, w/tack holes at corners, upper left corner having pull. Lower left corner is missing 1.5" corner piece, which slightly affects black portion of art.  Pin holes and some small scattered tears along margins, largest measuring .75" and intruding slightly into last panel by Tige image. Back has remnants from another work order and shows scattered dust soiling. VG overall. Great, humorous content. Art was originally obtained directly from Outcault family member and this is the first it is being offered at auction.
