Item Description
13.5x15.5" mat has relief-mounted 9.5x10-7/8" artboard featuring mixed media original art by R.F. Outcault used for published July 1914 calendar advertising postcard. Wonderful summer scene shows Tige swimming w/Buster Brown standing on shore, their tent visible in bkg. Tige is surrounded by a fish, bee and dragonfly and a parade on flying insects hover on the summer air between Tige and Buster. Lower left has hand-lettered "Come On In Buster, The Water's Fine" text. The published art saw Buster's suit printed in a deep red color, differing from the original art offered here, which featured a much more muted color closer to Buster's own skin tone, likely the reason for the change. Upper right has vertical line, this was edge of calendar, which overlapped art as published. As such, right side of art is missing small section at lower corner, but this is not distracting as trimmed. Top center has pin hole w/pin holes at bottom left corner. Some faint vertical moisture streaking across text, but not distracting. Small .25" spot of staining at lower right below fish image. Small bit on inking to Buster's shoulder. Fine overall, but art has much nicer eye appeal than stated grade. While relief-mounted, this could be easily removed. Wonderful advertising related art. Art was originally obtained directly from Outcault family member and this is the first it is being offered at auction.
