Item Description
9x24.5" Victory Illustration Board features pen and ink/ink wash original art by Ed Smalle, who provided art for magazines as well as comic books published by Ace Periodicals, MLJ Publications (Archie Comics), DC Comics, etc. Art was published at the top of pages 40-41 of "True Aviation Picture Stories" #4, published by Parents' Magazine Press in 1943. Art features action-packed World War II scene, showing Allied soldiers and equipment (including a Jeep) landing in America's first military stealth aircraft, the Waco CG-4A combat glider. Known as "Flying Coffins" and "Tow Targets" due to their reliance on air currents to power their ungainly flight, several are scene in the skies above the landing. Art was used as the first illustration for the issue's "Silent Birdmen" story. Smalle has signed and dated art just below center right and bottom margin has handwritten title and measurements. Artboard has some corner tip wear but art remains clean and Exc.
