Item Description
15-1/8x29" artboard w/pen and ink original art for Feb. 27, 1944 Sunday page w/art by "Brenda Starr, Reporter" creator Dale Messick. Debuting in 1940, this is a nice early example w/11 panels (including title panel) and story has Brenda on the story about five ships about to be launched at dockyard, all the while harboring suspicions about villain The Dentist. She sees the they are using grease from an inedible banana to lubricate the boat slip, causing Brenda to proclaim "Banana Oil!!" before spotting that the product comes from Bite'So. Brenda appears in all panels. First panel has hand-lettered title, not the typically-seen paste-over and has been signed below by Messick. Eighth panel has The Chicago Tribune copyright paste-over strip. Bottom margin has some penciled editorial notations and margins shows scattered wear w/pin holes at corners and along margins, which have some dust soiling. Artboard is Fine overall, but art remains clean and Exc. Would make for nice framed display.
