Item Description
Pair of kits from the first year of issue - 1939. Original matching envelopes w/"Supermen Of America" address and inked recipient's names/address (addressed to brother and sister at same address). Envelopes show some handling/mailing wear, w/scattered age spotting but are complete aside from single missing closure prong on back of each. Fine overall. Single 5.5x8-3/8" welcome letter notes contents of kit and features classic image of Superman breaking chains. Postscript mentions six DC comic titles - "Detective Comics, Adventure Comics, More Fun Comics, Movie Comics, All American Comics" and "New York World's Fair Comics." Some lt. handling wear/aging but VF overall. Certificate and membership kits for this club were issued in many different configurations from 1939 to 1965, including varieties issued during the first year. This is the first version from the first year, w/fully printed 1939 date at bottom w/o month/day inkstamp. Certificates were issued to same sister/brother pair, and certificates bear sequential numbers - "19275/19276." A later version just has "19" printed w/the other two numbers to be filled in when issued. There are also other versions from the first year w/a 1939 copyright at bottom margin. Certificate has typed member name/age/address (which matches that on envelope) on provided lines. Horizontal fold at center of each as issued. Both have scattered handling wear w/creases and are Fine/VF overall. Pair of 5.5x8.5" cardstock "Superman's Secret Code" decoder folders (w/unused recipient name/address lines) were used to decipher "Superman's Secret Message" in each issue of "Action Comics." Fronts have iconic image of Superman breaking chains and backs have different text/code than on later issues. Both are folded as issued and each has partial circle of punctures and oxidation from buttons that were once attached at front center. One has moderate aging to back and is VG while other displays Fine. Lot also includes matching pair of 1.25" die. cello club buttons. One has some scattered oxidation to collet, but o/w both remain bright and glossy. Fine to VF. Early and historic. Any Supermen of America kits issued to girls are rare, let alone a matched set issued to siblings. Rare and first we've seen as such in our 53 years. Something very unique for the Superman collector.
