Item Description
This premium was briefly issued in late 1939/early 1940 in "Action Comics" and "Superman" comic books and was obtained by recruiting three friends to join the Supermen of America Club. Large 5.5" dia. emblem/patch is one of the very earliest Superman premiums and was originally advertised as a "Superman Emblem." Unlike other similar patches which are just felt, this is made of two thin layers of felt and sandwiched between these layers is a thin sheet of cardboard which gives the patch a high degree of stiffness although it flexes under pressure. Front has choice silk-screened design featuring classic image of Superman breaking chains surrounded by "Supermen Of America - Action Comics" text. This is variety w/o fleshtone coloring on face and hands or yellow on "S" chest symbol (see following item). Emblem/patch has all over age spotting and moderate aging/staining to back,  but has no creases and silk-screened design remains strong. Top/bottom center have single pin hole. VG overall. Comes w/original mailer w/"Supermen Of America" return address and "Detective Comics, Inc." mailing label w/typed recipient name/address. 1939 postmark. Envelope has scattered age spotting and handling wear w/creases and more moderate aging to mailing label. Envelope is Fine overall. Comes w/generic stiff cardstock insert which has some aging from where emblem/patch touched. 5.5x8.5" letter on illustrated "Supermen Of America" letterhead noting included emblem/patch and thanking member for recruiting three new club members. Letter mentions "Action Comics." Letter bears matching aging from emblem/patch and some scattered minor staining to "Supermen" name at top. VG/Fine. There are far fewer emblems than copies of "Action Comics" #1, w/only about a dozen known examples. One of the rarest and most desirable Superman premiums. As rare as the emblem/patch is, the accompanying letter is even more rare w/even fewer known examples. Still rarer to obtain a complete set w/all included here.
