Item Description
Complete 10.25x14-7/8" cover proof to "The Big All-American Comic Book," published by DC Comics in 1944. Front cover features stunning art featuring 26 of DC's popular comic book characters, including Golden Age Flash and Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, The Atom, Mister Terrific, Johnny Thunder and Thunderbolt, Hawkman and Wildcat among others. Back cover features facsimile note to "Script And Art Department," noting that "The Big All-American Comic Book Is To Features All Brand New Never Before Published Episodes Of America's Greatest Comics!" and goes on to list some of the characters appearing on checkerboard bkg. Top center of front cover has staple holes w/pull and 1/8" piece missing from margin as originally attached to included form-letter to comics wholesalers for the affiliated Independent News Co. Inc. Text from Circulation Director Jack B. Adams promotes the new title and its complement of popular characters featured in the 128-page title. Adams has signed letter and upper right corner has pencil note from Jack Liebowitz - co-owner of National Allied Publications (later DC Comics) - about letters sent to US and Canadian distributors. Liebowitz, in his role as publisher, played an important part in the superhero boom of the 1930s and 1940s. Top center has two staple holes (partly affecting Liebowitz's note) and letter has been folded as mailed, matching fold lines seen on cover proof. Aside from issue at top of front cover, cover proof is bright, clean and Fine. Letter has upper right corner tip off and spot of staining at upper left. Fine/VF. Something very rare and very different for the comic collector and Golden Age historian.
