Item Description
Between 1933 and 1953, Richard Curtis Van Loan - aka The Phantom - solved crimes in the pages of 170 issues of the "Phantom Detective" pulp magazine. Created by D.L. Champion, The Phantom was a genius of disguise and a physical marvel. During the 1930s, readers could join The Friends of The Phantom club and receive a membership card and member badge. Both are offered here, along w/welcome letter. 2.5x4.25" membership card w/inked recipient and club secretary names as well as penciled height, eye/hair color and weight. Left edge has 1/8" and .25" tear where badge was attached as well as a few small surface indents. Fine overall. Card is rare. 15/16" tall brass shield-shaped badge has high relief image of The Phantom Detective in top hat and mask w/gloved hand held to his chin and "Friends Of The Phantom" name at bottom. Exc. Badge is scarce. 3-7/8x6" single-sided stiff paper card has printed message welcoming club member, urging vigilance and aid in stamping out crime. Facsimile signature of The Phantom at bottom. Horizontal fold at center as issued. Card has some lt. scattered aging and is o/w VF. Letter is very rare. All are the actual examples shown in "The Official Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia" by Ted Hake and comes with COA.
