Item Description
16x24.25" thin cardboard window card produced by "Tilghman Press" advertising a concert on "Sun. Nite Oct 18th" in San Diego that featured Little Richard w/"The 4 T's," "Larry Laster" and "Malcolm Hayes." Additional text above image of Richard performing reads "The King Is Back With... Complete Show/ Direct From His Record Breaking Tour Of England And European Continent." Margin has a less than .5" area around border that is slightly darker from previous framing. Two tack holes affecting black bar at top of design, a surface paper lift just left of the "P" in "Pacific" at top left and scattered light brown stains at top r/l affecting the "P" and "M" of "Pacific Ballroom." Otherwise moderate handling wear and age toning. Fine. This poster should not be confused w/a similar used for a show at San Francisco's Straight Theater in 1967. The present design utilizes split fountain printing and features bold day-glo orange and mint green colors. Richard had recently completed a tour of England w/the Rolling Stones as the opening act and had headlined a London show that also featured The Beatles in 1962. Richards' influence on the artist of the British invasion is well known and his claim to the title of 'Architect of Rock 'N Roll' is undisputed. Richard had left the world of secular music abruptly in 1957 after seeing a fireball in the sky during a performance in Sydney, Australia. He became a minister and began recording gospel music. In 1962 he was booked to a European tour w/opening act Sam Cooke. Hearing the crowds response to Cooke's R&B performance Richard scrapped his gospel set and quickly arranged an R&B set w/organist Billy Preston. The English crowds were hysterical for Richard and he would soon meet the Beatles, then still unknown to US audiences. Richard returned to Europe the following year to save an ailing Everly Brothers/Bo Diddley tour that featured opening band the Rolling Stones. After that tour he returned to America for the comeback tour that this window card advertises. This poster captures Richards at a historic moment in his fabled career and is the only example known to have survived. A special opportunity to obtain a significant poster from the Architects return.
