Item Description
14.25x20.5" thin artboard features India ink original art for page 17 of "Popeye" #3 published by Dell, Aug.-Sept. 1948. Art is by Bud Sagendorf (1915-1994), who began his career as the assistant of cartoonist E.C. Segar on his "Thimble Theatre" and "Sappo" comic strips. Sagendorf began illustrating "Popeye" comics in 1948. This art is from that first year and features seven panels, showing Popeye in four, as he and fellow sailor Bill discuss "Ghost Trap" set on the deck of the ship in order to catch one of the ghosts haunted the ship. Ghosts show up in third panel, amusedly looking at the trap before being scared off as alarm goes off. Popeye and Bill run to see what all the fuss is and decide to throw it overboard (not knowing a disguised Olive Oyl is within. Artboard has some production notations at top/bottom margins, w/inked title, issue/page number at bottom. Second panel has aged text paste-over, o/w art remains clean and Exc.
