Item Description
3.5x5.5" nice quality Kodak Professional AZO paper postcard w/glossy front. Printed date on bottom front margin reads "Enero" (January) "21-1934." Great image of three teams in uniforms standing on a ball field. These teams were part of a Venezuelan baseball tournament and competed for supremacy in Latin America. This tournament would become on of the most important of the era. The top team, Concordia, is in the center. Shown are National Baseball HOF members Dihigo (first player on the left for Concordia) and a young Josh Gibson (second player to the right of the man in a gray suit). Cuban HOF member Oms is at the far right in dapper attire of white suit, tie and hat. Others on the team roster that season and likely pictured are: Rap Nixon, Tetelo Vargas and Luis Aparicio Sr., although the images are quite small so we have not been able to positively identify these players. The other teams shown flanking Concordia are Tigres Del Licey at the left and the Escogido club at the right. Reverse has been inked including date of 4/3/34. Front shows light wear in reflected light but remains glossy w/sharp image. Fine. Only a couple of other original images are known of this powerhouse 1934 Concordia team. One other is a 3.5x5.5" (similar in size to this postcard) team photo from the Merkin collection that we sold in our March 2012 auction for $9,557.
