Item Description

14x22" cardboard poster for December 10, 1961 concert featuring "Ahmad Jamal And His Trio" and "Aretha Franklin" that took place at Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo, New York. Featuring bold portrait of Jamal and a young image of Franklin. At this point in her career Franklin was only 19 years old and had signed w/Columbia in the middle of 1960. The song listed on this poster, "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody," was her first Top 40 hit. This was likely printed locally and is a unique one off design that was not used to advertise other concerts during the 1961 tour. Staple holes; left of center along bottom edge, in field affecting the "Y" in "Melody," and at top corners. Also a faint 1/4x2" damp stain in top margin at center, a 1/4" surface paper lift at top left corner (w/paper remaining attached) and light age toning at top right corner. Otherwise only a few scattered corner bends that do not break the surface paper and handling wear consistent w/light use. Fine. This is the earliest known poster to picture Franklin and to our knowledge her photo did not grace another concert poster until 1966. By the end of the 1960's Franklin would be one of the most famous entertainers in the world and would be known as the Queen of Soul. An important early career artifact featuring Franklin at the beginning of her rise to international fame. See previous lot for additional information about this historic venue.
