Item Description

14x22" cardboard poster advertising a Ray Charles concert at Kleinhans Music Hall Buffalo, NY on October 15, 1961. Design features image of Charles standing leaned against his piano w/text "The Genius" above and additional photo of "The Raelets" at right. Additional text at top reads "Joe Rico And Buffalo Jazz Festival Present." Ticket prices and outlets are listed at bottom. This was likely printed locally and is a unique one off design that was not used for other shows during the 1961 tour. Staple holes at bottom left, top center and bottom center. Also a less than 3/4" vertical tear at bottom center, a faint damp stain affecting the top right corner that extends 4" along top edge and 7" along right side and extends between 1/4" to less than 2" into the field. For strict accuracy we mention a 1/16" wide clean straight sliver trimmed from the right edge. This likely occurred when the cardboard placard was cut during manufacturing and does not affected any printed text. Otherwise only scattered and light bends at top corners and handling wear consistent w/moderate use. Fine. A rare survivor from the early days of Charles years as an ABC-Paramount recording artist. At the time Charles was the first African American musician given full artistic control of his recordings. During his career Charles enjoyed only three #1 pop hits, "Georgia," "Hit The Road Jack," and "I Can't Stop Loving You." This concert occurred the exact day "Hit The Road Jack" entered the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. As a side note the venue, Kleinhans Music Hall, is considered among the greatest concert halls ever built in the United States. The historic hall was built by famed father and son architects  Eleil and Eero Saarinen and opened in 1940. See next item #2409 for Ahmad Jamal/Aretha Franklin concert poster also from this historic venue.
