Item Description
Original glossy 8x10" photo is c. 1938. Wonderful image of Effa in a dress and wearing a Newark Eagles ball cap while being instructed on how to hold a bat by Mule Suttles. Reverse has publication notations. Lt. handling wear w/tiny tear on lower right margin. Image remains glossy, bold and sharp. Fine. This is one of few known career contemporary photos of Effa who was a female sports executive and the first woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. She co-owned the Newark Eagles baseball franchise in the Negro League with her husband Abe from 1935-1946 and was sole owner through 1948 after his death. Suttles was an American first baseman and outfielder who played most prominently with the Birmingham Black Barons, St. Louis Stars, and Newark Eagles. In five years with the Stars, between 1926 and 1930, he led the league in home runs twice and in doubles, triples and batting average once each. He was inducted into the HOF in 2006.
