Item Description

15-5/8x20" artboard w/pen and ink original art by John Clubb Scott (1875-1934), a political cartoonist known for his cartoons that appeared in New York newspapers and frequently featured Theodore Roosevelt. This example shows overweight old man w/"Congress" emblazoned across the front of his pants smoking cigar under the shade of a tree w/several newspapers noting themes of war and touting the superiority of the Japanese Navy as inset circle at top right features Roosevelt, who states his hopes for a bolstered Navy w/the support of Congress, "If I Can Persuade Them." This naval build-up would eventually lead to the rise of the US Navy' Great White Fleet, which toured around the globe per Roosevelt's orders during 1907-1909. This art is dated 1905 at lower right, along w/Clubb Scott's signature. Small penciled caption along bottom margin reads "Congress Can Sit In The Shade This Summer And Think It Over." .25" tear at center left w/.75" margin tear at lower right. Artboard is Fine overall, but art remains clean and would display Exc. if matted and framed.
