Philip Haas enlisted in the Union Army at 1861 and was assigned to special service in photography, attached to General Gilmore's army in 1862. His assistant was Washington Peale. This photo was taken during the Charleston Campaign of 1863 and shows four Union officers along w/African-American soldier and another soldier in tent w/sign noting "Mail" at peak of tent. Identities of the officers was noted at the time in ink on reverse. They are - Lt. Col. J.F. Halt, Major W.S. Strykes, Col. Nt. S. Littlefield and Major D. Bannister. Card photo is attached to has noticeable moisture staining along left margin which extends into left of photo, but this does not overly affect photo's display. Scattered aging and dust soiling. VG overall, but if matted and framed would display nicely. Great historical content.
